ABSTRACT: Breakthrough innovations arise from either a technology push or market pull. Both product development approaches benefit from applying systems engineering at the beginning of the product life cycle. This talk will focus on the systems engineering techniques implemented in the design of products of differing complexities: protein chips, hypodermic syringes and supercomputers. Lessons learned from product development in a life science startup versus Fortune 500 medical device and semiconductor companies will be presented.
