Work With Me: K - 12

Book Readings

Enjoy a 20-minute book reading of one of the Abby Invents books, followed by Q&A. (30-minute session)

Classroom Visits

Enjoy a 30-40 minute talk, followed by Q&A. (One-hour session)

Select one of the following topics:

Make the Impossible, Possible - Our backgrounds do not dictate our future. Learn that by embracing the opportunities available to us, we can become the first college graduate/inventor/author in our families.

Underrepresented Underestimated - People of color are often called "underrepresented". I like to think we are underestimated. Show students how they can use their talents to achieve their dreams. This talk highlights other kids/teens/people of color who are breaking barriers in their fields (engineering, entrepreneurship, etc.)

Multi-passionate Career Talk - Often, students think you can only be "one" thing when you grow up. This talk dispels this myth. I introduce students to a career in biomedical engineering, highlighting the education pathway to get there. I also give an overview of some of the roles I've held in my career in medical devices. Kids are also introduced to the process of taking a book from the first draft to the final, published version. How do you choose an illustrator? How many drafts are written? How long does it take? Highlighting the process shows kids that with both inventing and writing, there are many iterations before success

Innovation Workshops

workshops range from 1-2 hours

  • Brainstorm

Students are guided through an exercise to identify problems that they'd like to solve, highlight users of their invention and name their invention

  • Imagine, Invent, Iterate

Using household materials, K-5 students are guided through an iterative exercise to improve the design of a selected/pre-determined object/widget

  • Invent Like Abby

Students observe how Abby follows the engineering design process in Abby Invents The Foldibot, then create their own inventions

K-12 Educators

  • Teaching Curiosity

K-12 educators learn creative ways to excite students from diverse backgrounds about inventing and are shown ways to introduce invention education in the classroom

  • InventionLIT: Using Children’s Literature to Teach Invention Education

K-5 educators learn how to use any children’s book as a launch point for invention education in their classrooms. Educators complete the workshop with a lesson plan for using their favorite children’s book to introduce kids to the joys of inventing. Examples of lesson plans are available at InventionLIT.org
